Just a bit further, Sleepy Eye Minnesota awaits. It’s a small town offering a genuine slice of Midwest charm, an incredible coffee shop/brewery, and a beautiful lake.
So, if you’re planning a trip or just daydreaming about some hidden travel gems, consider this trio of Minnesota treasures. Let’s explore what makes these places so special!
Explore New Ulm, Minnesota
New Ulm, Minnesota is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of the picturesque Minnesota River Valley. This charming city offers a delightful blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. New Ulm has something to offer everyone.
Since moving to North Dakota in 2018, I have dreamed of visiting New Ulm. I lived in Germany for almost three years, so I really loved visiting New Braunfels for Wurstfest after moving back. Since then, I have become aware of charming towns where immigrants gathered years ago but the culture is still strong and alive. (Holland, Michigan is on my list to visit – this girl LOVES Tulips and all things Dutch.)
Discover the Charm of New Ulm
As you step foot in New Ulm, you will be captivated by its small-town charm and welcoming atmosphere. The city’s German heritage is evident in its beautifully preserved architecture, quaint shops, and friendly locals. Take a leisurely stroll through the historic downtown area, lined with charming boutiques, antique shops, and cozy cafes. Allow yourself to be transported back in time as you explore the well-preserved buildings telling the stories of New Ulm’s rich history.
Enjoy the Rich History of New Ulm
History enthusiasts will be enchanted by New Ulm’s fascinating past. The city played a significant role in the settlement of Minnesota and the struggles of early pioneers. Visit the Brown County Historical Society Museum, where you can delve into the intriguing stories of the region. Take a guided tour of the Hermann Monument, a towering tribute to the Germanic heritage of the city. Immerse yourself in the tales of the Dakota War of 1862 at the Wanda Gág House, the childhood home of a renowned author and illustrator.
My two favorite stops while we walked the town were German Park and the Glockenspiel. German Park has the most incredible gardens! We loved finding a Geocache in this park and then walking the grounds. Close by is the Glockenspiel – which is the town clock. The clock plays a program with figurines and bells a few different times a day – Noon, 1, 3, 5 and 6 PM daily (Apr 1 – Oct 31) // Noon, 3 and 5 daily (Nov 1 – Mar 31) – and was really fun to watch. If you are here for the holidays, the figurines are replaced with a nativity scene.
Indulge in the Local Cuisine of New Ulm
No visit to New Ulm would be complete without savoring the local cuisine. The city is known for its German heritage, and you can taste it in every bite. Treat your taste buds to mouthwatering bratwurst, sauerkraut, and pretzels at one of the authentic German restaurants. Wash it down with a refreshing pint of locally brewed beer from one of the many breweries in the area. Don’t forget to try the iconic New Ulm specialty, Schell’s beer, a local favorite for over 150 years.
We enjoyed eating at Lola for breakfast. They have a coffee counter for takeaway coffee and serve breakfast and lunch. Their menu even features gluten-free items! All three of us loved our lattes and breakfast – I would definitely recommend it!
After visiting New Ulm, Minnesota, I would say that it is a destination that effortlessly combines charm, history, and yummy treats. Whether you’re seeking a relaxing getaway or an immersive cultural experience, this enchanting city has it all. Explore the streets lined with historic buildings, soak in the rich history, and indulge in the delectable local cuisine. New Ulm is waiting to welcome you with open arms and a warm smile.
Fort Ridgely State Park
For this trip, we wanted to camp so we could meet up with a friend who was traveling through the area. We hadn’t been to Fort Ridgely State Park yet and it was close to New Ulm, so we booked it! I really loved camping here – it was quiet and featured large camping spots with privacy. Plus, the park is just completely a new bathroom remodel – which is always nice for us teardrop campers that have to use the State Park’s facilities.
This state park is a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Minnesota, offering visitors a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and outdoor activities. We really enjoyed the history of the park and the Hiking Club trail. (P.S. If you haven’t heard about Minnesota State Park’s Hiking Club – definitely check it out!)
Learn about the History of Fort Ridgely
This historic site played a pivotal role in the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862, and walking amidst the reconstructed buildings was like taking a step back in time. The park even features a museum, which is housed in the original commissary building.
Embrace the Beauty of Nature at the State Park
The park is situated on the banks of the scenic Minnesota River, and its lush woodlands, sprawling prairies, and picturesque bluffs create a breathtaking backdrop. As we walked along the hiking trails, I really enjoyed all of the vibrant wildflowers.

From hiking and biking to camping and horseback riding, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. The park features miles of well-maintained trails that cater to hikers and bikers of all skill levels. Experience the Tranquility of Sleepy Eye
Since this was our first camping trip of the season, we inevitably forgot something (dish soap of all things) and needed to pop into town. Sleepy Eye was a quick drive away and I was hoping to find a coffee shop while we were there. I know, I know – but you are camping! I like to joke that I am a bougie camper – I love state parks and I love finding local coffee shops.
Sleepy Eye, Minnesota is a charming small town nestled in the heart of the countryside, offering a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. With its friendly community, picturesque landscapes, and rich history, Sleepy Eye is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered.
Visit the Iconic Attraction in Sleepy Eye
For a taste of local culture, don’t miss the Sleepy Eye Brewing Company. This microbrewery combines traditional brewing methods with a modern twist, offering a variety of unique and flavorful craft beers. Take a tour, sample their brews, and immerse yourself in the vibrant atmosphere of this local gem.
The Sleepy Eye Coffee Company is located inside of Sleepy Eye Brewing Company and it was even more than I could have hoped for! The coffee was great but the shop and brewery are just gorgeous – truly a hidden gem. The historic Pix Theater was closed in 1986 and has been reopened in recent years as a coffee shop and brewery. When we stepped inside I was truly shocked at just how pretty it was; it’s a fun blend of the theater and modern design.
Explore the Surrounding Nature and Parks
If you’re a nature enthusiast, be sure to visit the Sleepy Eye Lake Park. This serene lake offers opportunities for boating, fishing, and bird-watching. Pack a picnic and spend a leisurely day by the water, taking in the peaceful ambiance and enjoying the company of loved ones. We brought our paddleboards and enjoyed paddling with the dogs across the lake.
For those seeking a unique adventure, the Sleepy Eye Bike Trail provides a picturesque route for cycling enthusiasts. Pedal your way through the rolling countryside, breathing in the fresh air and reveling in the beauty of the surrounding landscape. This trail offers a perfect blend of exercise and natural exploration.
